General Interpretation

Upright

In a general context, the Two of Swords indicates being stuck. You have a decision to make but something is preventing you from moving forward. Maybe you're afraid to make the decision. Maybe you just don't have the information you need to decide. Whatever the case, you are unwilling or unable to see the situation clearly and your mind is torn between two choices that seem to be equally balanced. This Minor Arcana card often appears when someone is trying to avoid the truth of a situation or delaying making a decision they know has to be made. You will feel the mental tension but there is also a feeling of standstill. Everything remains at a standstill until you decide which path to take. It represents that awkward stalemate between your head and your heart where there is no winner.

Reversed

When reversed, the Two of Swords can indicate a change. The blindfold is removed. Information that was previously concealed becomes available and clarity begins to form. However, this new-found clarity is not necessarily positive. Sometimes the truth that is revealed is not a nice one and can cause an onslaught of anxiety or overwhelm. If you have been unable to make up your mind, this reversal can indicate that you will make a decision, for better or worse. You may make a choice just for the sake of choosing rather than because it is the best option. You may also have been feeling forced to make a choice before you were ready to. There is also a similar meaning to the upright Devil card in that a lie or deception may be revealed to you. You may realise the truth of a matter that you've had in front of you all along and just not seen.

Love & Partnership

Upright

For those in a relationship, the Two of Swords is not a great omen as it indicates that there is tension in your relationship. This may be a particular issue that you both are aware of but neither of you is willing to bring it to the table. It can also indicate a lack of connection and polite avoidance in order to maintain the peace. Communication may be severed or very guarded with each of you keeping your true thoughts to yourself.

For single people, this card can indicate being torn between two potential love interests or being unsure of what you want. You may be overthinking things and not making a move in terms of romance. You may be protecting yourself and keeping your heart closed off.

Reversed

In relationships, the Two of Swords in a reversed position indicates that previously hidden issues will come to the fore. Much-avoided conversations will take place. This may be a welcome release or it may lead to arguments depending on how much of a powder keg your relationship was before it appeared. Either way, the walls are coming down.

If you are single, again this reversal can indicate a change in mindset relating to love. You may find that old fears or blocks about dating are being removed. Or it can signify that someone you were previously unsure about will become much clearer to you in terms of their suitability, either in a positive or negative way. The confusion lifts and the emotions involved are easier to interpret.

Social Relationships

Upright

In terms of existing friendships and social circles, the Two of Swords indicates that there could be a standoff situation. Maybe there is an issue that needs to be resolved but nobody is willing to address it or maybe you are being forced to choose between loyalty to two people or groups. It can also simply indicate that you are remaining neutral but that neutrality is more an act of avoidance than a genuine truce.

In terms of new social connections, this card indicates that you may be hesitant to meet new people. Meeting new people may be challenging as you have a guarded mindset. You are reluctant to open up or let anyone in as you may fear being judged or betrayed. Trust does not come easily in a Two of Swords phase.

Reversed

In established friendships, the reversed Two of Swords sees the truth being revealed. Maybe someone finally comes out and says what they've been thinking. Maybe a hidden conflict comes to light. It can be disruptive but it can also be a much-needed breath of fresh air.

For new social connections, this reversal offers a bit more openness. The guard drops a little. You may find that you are a lot more honest or vulnerable than you intended to be. It can also signify a change in first impressions. Someone you initially kept at arm's length may show you a side of themselves that changes the dynamic completely.

Work & Career

Upright

In a career context, the Two of Swords represents a career crossroads. This could be a choice between two job offers, two projects, two paths in terms of direction. It represents paralysis in a career. You don't feel one option is better than the other and the information available to you doesn't help you favour one option. It can also signify office politics or workplace drama that is going on but no one is confronting.

Reversed

In a reversed context, this card can signify moving on after a period of career inertia. A choice is made, even if not the right one. You will gain clarity either through gathering more information, through feedback or results, or a change in situation. It can also indicate workplace deception being revealed such as discovering the true reason for a policy change or finally figuring out the reason for bizarre behaviour from a colleague.

Money & Finance

Upright

Financially, the Two of Swords indicates that you may be unsure of which direction to take in relation to money. You may have two financial options available to you such as saving or investing or spending or not spending. Alternatively, you may find yourself paralysed financially and unable to do anything as you are unsure of the best course of action. It can also signify that you are unwilling to confront the reality of your financial situation, either because you don't want to accept it or because you are afraid of what it will reveal.

Reversed

In a financial context, the Two of Swords reversed can signify hidden financial information being revealed. Perhaps you notice an error on a bill or invoice or remember a debt you owed to someone. It can also be a sign that you have finally got down to budget and balance your accounts after avoiding it for as long as you could. The mental block around money has been released and although the figures may not make you happy, at least you know where you stand.

Spirituality

Upright

Spiritually, the Two of Swords indicates that you are disconnecting your mind from your intuition. Your mind is trying to control everything and your inner voice is ignored. You may be experiencing a period of stalled spiritual growth as you overthink or don't allow yourself to be comfortable with not having the answers. Not everything can be figured out with logic but that is what this card represents.

Reversed

When reversed in a spiritual context, this card indicates reopening. The mental blocks that prevented you from accessing your intuition begin to collapse. You become more willing to feel rather than to simply think. Old, outdated beliefs may be challenged or discarded. You may reach a point where you realise that rather than fighting your intuition, you just need to listen to it.
