General Interpretation

Upright

In a general context, the Three of Swords is not a great omen to get in a Tarot spread as it is one of the strongest cards signifying grief, sorrow, heartbreak and deep emotional pain. This is serious heartbreak, not the usual letdowns life brings. This is the kind of heartbreak that leaves you changed forever. It can signify personal loss or death, betrayal of some kind or a painful truth being revealed. Sometimes the betrayal will be at the hands of someone we trusted. Other times it may simply be the painful realisation that we have been holding on to an illusion and life has finally burst that bubble. Whatever the case, it signifies true pain, heartbreak and sorrow and that pain must be experienced before it can be released.

Reversed

When reversed, the Three of Swords indicates that the worst of the emotional pain may be passing. You are still grieving but the grief is starting to release you. However, in some cases, the Three of Swords reversed can actually indicate the opposite... it can be an indication of someone refusing to let go of their pain or suppressing it deep down where it will fester. There is a difference between allowing yourself to recover and completely numbing yourself to the pain. This Minor Arcana card in a reversed position asks which one is happening. You can't recover until you face your emotions honestly.

Love & Partnership

Upright

If you are in a relationship, the Three of Swords indicates that you may be heading into a rough time. That may be a breakup, cheating or hurtful fights. Trust may have been broken. Words may have been said in anger that have caused more damage than anticipated. This card does not necessarily signify the end of a relationship but it does signify a heartbreak or betrayal that will be felt by both parties. The pain represented by this Minor Arcana card is not something that can be healed with a simple sorry.

If you are single, the Three of Swords indicates that your heartbreak from a previous relationship may still be impacting you. Perhaps you were rejected by someone you loved or a previous relationship ended horribly. Whatever the case, it appears that the grief you suffered in the aftermath of that heartbreak has not yet been fully processed by you. You will find it difficult to begin a healthy relationship with anyone new until you release this pain as it is affecting your ability to relate to other people.

Reversed

In relationships, the Three of Swords reversed can signify the start of healing. A couple may be trying to mend a betrayal in their relationship or bouncing back from a difficult period. Forgiveness may be offered, albeit grudgingly. Alternately, it can indicate that someone is acting as if the heartache never occurred and is sweeping the conflict in their relationship under the rug.

For single people, the Three of Swords reversed can represent someone who is starting to let go. The pain of an old heartbreak is beginning to dull somewhat. You may find when you think of your ex, it doesn't hurt as much as it did previously. You are making space for something new to come into your life. In some readings, the Three of Swords reversed indicates that you have made a decision to not let your past pain affect your future anymore.

Social Relationships

Upright

In the context of friendships or social circles, the Three of Swords indicates hurt feelings, gossip or a falling out. Perhaps a close friend said something hurtful. Perhaps a group dynamic has changed and has left you feeling excluded. This is the kind of pain we experience in relation to friends that may not seem serious to some people, but to those of us that have had friendships we trusted broken, it can be just as painful as a broken heart.

In terms of new social connections, this card indicates that if you have been burned in a social situation before, you may be a little reserved when it comes to meeting new people or joining new groups. You are very guarded. It's much more difficult to meet new people when the people you trusted previously have let you down, and the apprehension is evident in this card.

Reversed

For existing friendships, the Three of Swords in a reversed position can indicate reconciliation. If you have held a grudge against an old friend or a past issue caused a rift in your friendship, the Three of Swords reversed can indicate a softening of attitudes. A friend who wronged you in the past may be reaching out to you, or it may simply be a sign that the heartbreak caused by a previous falling out is no longer as painful as it once was. However, it can also be an indication that either you or your friend are suppressing your resentment rather than addressing it, so look to the supporting cards to see which way it is leaning.

For new social connections, the reversal is slightly more positive. The walls you have built from past social injuries are beginning to come down. You are more willing to give people a chance even if you have been burned in the past. You are opening up in a way you may not have been previously, although some of the old caution may be still there subconsciously.

Work & Career

Upright

In a career context, the Three of Swords can signify conflict, disappointment or a painful setback in a work situation. This may take the form of a loss of a job, a failed project or a personalising of conflict with colleagues. It can also be caused by criticism of work that you perceive as unfair or a demotion. It can also simply be a sign of feeling unappreciated or betrayed by someone in a work environment. The disappointment indicated here is more severe than normal frustration. It's deeper than that.

Reversed

In a work reading, the Three of Swords reversed indicates that you are coming to terms with a difficult time in your career. If you were laid off or had a falling out in your workplace that you found devastating at the time, you are now learning to live with it. You are beginning to understand what that experience has taught you. Alternatively, it can indicate that someone is remaining in an unhealthy work environment and refusing to recognise the negative impact it's having on them. We can only grow through our pain, not bury it to maintain our comfort levels.

Money & Finance

Upright

Financially, the Three of Swords can signify a loss or bad news in relation to finances. This could take the form of an unexpected expense or a poor investment that does not bring the returns you hoped for. It can also indicate financial hardship or difficulty brought about as a result of a separation or breakup. There is a strong emotional element involved here also. Financial issues associated with this card usually involve some sort of grief or stress that goes beyond just the financial aspect. A financial loss that is coupled with some sort of personal betrayal is particularly hard to deal with.

Reversed

In a financial context, the Three of Swords in reverse can signify slowly getting back on track after a financial blow. Perhaps your debts are decreasing or you're finding it possible to implement a financial budget that you previously struggled to adhere to. The light is finally becoming visible at the end of a dark tunnel. However, on the negative side, the Three of Swords reversed can signify that you may be trying to avoid your financial reality, not checking your bank balance, not opening bills, sticking your head in the sand about your finances.

Spirituality

Upright

Spiritually, the Three of Swords can indicate growth through suffering. Pain is never pleasant but it can be a great way of shaking us out of our illusions and making us focus on what's important. It is a dark night of the soul type of card. Your faith may be shaken and old belief systems may no longer be able to withstand the sorrow or hardship you have experienced, but sometimes beliefs need to be broken open in order for something more genuine to grow in their place. The spiritual path is not always an easy path to walk, as this card shows.

Reversed

In a spiritual context, the Three of Swords in reverse can signify finding meaning in pain. The worst of the pain is over and you are now able to begin to integrate the lessons it brought you. You may have found that the emotional pain you were carrying was hindering your connection to your spirituality. Now, that is beginning to resolve and you are feeling some measure of peace, even if it is very small. For others, it can signify a conscious choice to release bitterness and opt for a more compassionate approach to others and yourself.
