General Interpretation
Upright
In a general context, the Four of Pentacles is a Minor Arcana Tarot card of clinging. It signifies a need for control and security, and this need is usually expressed in the form of clinging to money, possessions or people. You may simply want to protect what you have created. And that instinct is not necessarily a bad one. Sometimes you do need to protect what's yours. But when you hold on too tightly to things, stability can start to feel like stagnation. The Four of Pentacles can indicate that you are so busy holding onto what you have that you are missing out on opportunities to expand, make contact with others or explore new experiences. It is fear of losing everything that you have.
Reversed
When reversed, the Four of Pentacles can go one of two ways. One option is releasing the iron grip and learning to be more giving. That is the positive, healthy version. The other is losing all control of finances. Letting money slip through your fingers. Being overly generous to the point of recklessness or wasting money on things you don't need and leaving nothing for a rainy day. The reversal removes the control element of the upright card, for better or worse.
Love & Partnership
Upright
In a relationships context, the Four of Pentacles can signify possessiveness or being emotionally closed off. One partner may be holding their emotions close to their chest. Or there may be attempts to control aspects of the relationship such as joint decision-making, finances or time spent outside of the relationship. The relationship may be stable but feeling restrictive. It can also indicate that you are clinging to the security a relationship provides you so much that you are unwilling to allow any changes in the relationship.
For single people, this card can indicate that in the wake of past hurt you may have put walls up. There is a protective barrier in place. You may feel that meeting new people is risky, as if you give too much you could lose control of the situation. It can also signify someone who is so preoccupied with building financial or personal stability that romance is repeatedly relegated to the back seat. The need for security takes precedence over the need for connection.
Reversed
In a relationship, the Four of Pentacles reversed can be indicative of walls coming down. Emotional openness may be making a comeback, or one half of the relationship may be finally willing to share more of themselves. However, it can also be indicative of financial bickering, one partner being reckless with money or feeling like the security in the relationship is unraveling. Again, context is important with this reversal. Ask yourself: do you feel liberated by the release or scared?
If you are single, again, this reversal can signify a change in attitude. The hold on independence or previous hurt is starting to ease. You are more prepared to take a chance on someone. Alternatively, it can indicate that you are giving too much too soon, diving into every new potential relationship without considering things. The balance between protecting yourself and being open hasn't been struck yet.
Work & Career
Upright
In a career context, the Four of Pentacles can indicate job security. It can also signify someone taking a conservative approach to their career or remaining in a secure job that no longer satisfies them. It can indicate someone being a bit of a knowledge or resource hoarder at work rather than sharing. There is an element of guarding one's position, title or turf with this card. Change is resisted. You may even decline a promotion or opportunity as you are afraid of the unknown and cling to what you know. Financial security and discipline are the positive aspects. Career stagnation is the negative.
Reversed
Reversed in a work reading, this card can indicate loosening that professional grip. Maybe someone is ready to quit that secure job. Maybe someone is ready to share their ideas and delegate a bit. Maybe someone is ready to take a chance on a new business. It can also represent losing a job or losing money or stability through bad career choices. A business could be bleeding money. Someone could be splashing the cash on professional gear or training that doesn't pay off. Whatever the case, the old security is changing and what will fill the gap is down to the decisions being made.
Money & Finance
Upright
This is one of the most straightforward financial cards in the deck. The Four of Pentacles upright generally sees you saving, budgeting and protecting your assets. Money is being tightly held onto. This is not a bad thing in itself. It indicates good financial sense and focusing on securing your future. It becomes an issue when saving turns into hoarding or when financial insecurity leaves you with everything you need but so anxious about losing your money you're miserable. The money is there, you just can't shake the fear that you're going to lose it. It can also indicate someone who uses money as a way of controlling their life.
Reversed
Reversed, the financial story is a different one. When reversed, money may be leaving your bank account faster than it's coming in. Impulse buying, poor investments or not being willing to stick to a budget can all be indicated by this card in a reversed position. However, sometimes this card in a reversed position indicates a financial loss that's forced on you by circumstances such as an unplanned costly expense or theft. Other times this card reversed signals a positive change where a person stops being overly frugal and starts having fun with their money. They finally take that trip they've been dreaming of or buy something they need that will make their life easier. The key differentiator with this reversed card is to look at whether the money being spent is on things that are enhancing your life or on things that are simply bad impulse buys.
Spirituality
Upright
Spiritually, the Four of Pentacles indicates that you are becoming too attached to the material world, which is hindering your spiritual development. If you are focused on gathering or hoarding your material wealth, you will have no energy left for spiritual pursuits. It can also signify rigid spiritual beliefs, clinging so tightly to one set of beliefs that you won't allow yourself to learn anything outside of your belief system. You find the certainty of your beliefs more comforting than the uncertainty of letting them go. In order to grow, you need to allow yourself to release old beliefs. This card indicates that you are not willing to do that.
Reversed
In a spiritual context, the Four of Pentacles reversed can indicate breakthrough. You may be releasing old attachments to material possessions or beliefs. You have more time for exploring or meditating on your spiritual side and genuine spiritual curiosity can take centre stage. However, as with all other aspects of life with this reversal, it can indicate a lack of grounding in your spiritual pursuits. An anchor is still needed, so try to find a balance between being too rigid and being completely formless.
🤝 Social Relationships
Upright
In terms of existing friendships and social circles, the Four of Pentacles can indicate someone who is a bit of a fair-weather friend. They'll turn up for you, but they don't really let you in. They may also be stingy, but not necessarily in a financial sense. They may be stingy with their time or energy. There is a transactional element to their friendships and socialising. Some of your friendships may feel one-sided as this person is always working out what they are getting for what they're giving.
When forming new social connections, this card indicates that you may be hesitant. Again, new people are the unknown and the unknown is threatening. You may find that you stick to familiar groups rather than expand your social circle. Your comfort zone is strong with this one and you don't see going outside it as worth the risk. New friendships can be formed but they will take a while to develop as you do not trust easily.
Reversed
In terms of existing social relationships, the reversal can indicate that someone is becoming more generous and open with their social circle. Old habits of keeping score or holding things back fade away. Alternatively, it can indicate that someone has allowed themselves to be taken advantage of. Their resources, emotional or material, have been leeched off by people who gave little or nothing back.
In terms of new social connections, the Four of Pentacles in a reversed position brings a bit more flexibility. You are less suspicious of people and more genuinely curious about them. The walls are coming down. However, there is a downside. Without boundaries, new friendships could attract people who are more interested in taking from you than giving to you. The openness is nice but it needs to be supported with a little bit of framework.
