General Interpretation
Upright
In a general context, the Nine of Swords is one of the heaviest cards in the deck. It signifies mental anguish. Worry, anxiety, fear, guilt, hopelessness, helplessness, despair... it signifies those thoughts you spiral into while the rest of the world sleeps! The fear and worst case scenario thinking this card brings usually relates to a recent or impending event. What makes this card especially interesting is that the suffering is often internal rather than caused by an outside event. The situation may not be as bad as you think it is. But that does not make the pain any less real. The Nine of Swords can indicate real anguish, either as a result of remorse for past decisions, anxiety about the future or shame that you have been carrying with you for far too long.
Reversed
When reversed, the Nine of Swords indicates that you may be coming out the other side of the darkness the upright card indicated. The anxiety loosens its grip. Not immediately but little by little. You start to see things clearly again and to heal. This reversal may also signify that fears or anxieties which have been suppressed are now emerging. It's not uncommon for things like this to get worse in the short term before they get better. However, usually unearthing and acknowledging these hidden fears is necessary in order to deal with them. In other instances, the Nine of Swords reversed indicates that one was worrying unnecessarily and the situation is actually working out to be much better than anticipated.
Love & Partnership
Upright
For those in relationships, the Nine of Swords is not a good omen as it indicates that you or your partner may be losing sleep over your relationship. Perhaps there has been a recent disagreement that has not been resolved, or there has been a betrayal or breach of trust that is yet to be resolved. It could also simply be a sense of growing apart that is leaving you both with a sense of anxiety. It is a strong indicator of trust issues. The relationship may not necessarily be in trouble but there is a real mental anguish relating to it.
For single people, if you have experienced heartbreak or rejection in the past, the effect of this may still be holding you back. Old wounds can make the idea of new love terrifying. The fear of getting hurt again can be so overwhelming that it drowns all other thoughts. You may find yourself overanalysing every text or phone call, reading into minute details or sabotaging things before they even have a chance to get off the ground.
Reversed
In relationships, the Nine of Swords in a reversed position indicates that you may be seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. Those sleepless nights and endless arguments may be starting to lose their grip. You and your partner may have found new ways to communicate with each other, or you may have simply come to the realisation that the fears you thought would come to pass were in fact only in your imagination. Things won't heal immediately but the worst seems to be subsiding.
For single people, in a general context, this reversal represents letting go. The old pain and fear of rejection begin to dissipate. You are becoming more willing to take a chance on someone without automatically assuming the worst. It is a card of recovering from a painful period in your life and gradually allowing yourself to be ready for something new.
Work & Career
Upright
In a career context, the Nine of Swords indicates that your work stress has exceeded normal levels. It could be that you are burnt out, fear that you will lose your job, are dreading a particular project or losing your mind over some sort of conflict in the workplace. The stress is so bad that you are unable to switch off when you get home. It is affecting your sleep and your concentration. It can also signify that you are suffering from imposter syndrome or are constantly fearful that someone will "find out" that you are not good enough. Whatever the source of the stress, it is very real, but your mind is also conjuring up worst case scenarios.
Reversed
Reversed, the Nine of Swords brings relief in a work context. The pressure is easing off. Perhaps a meeting you were dreading went well or a stressful project ended. It's becoming clear that things were never as bad as they seemed at the time. If you have been experiencing anxiety about work or burnout, the Nine of Swords reversed can indicate that you are starting to get back to yourself.
Money & Finance
Upright
Financially, the Nine of Swords indicates that you are worried about finances rather than being ruined financially. This is a key difference. This may be an indication that you are spiralling with anxiety about finances rather than there being a massive financial issue. Maybe you have debt, or some unexpected expenses have come in, or you just fear financial insecurity. This card indicates that those issues are causing you serious distress.
Reversed
In a financial context, the Nine of Swords reversed indicates that the panic induced by the upright card starts to ease. Perhaps you've managed to arrange a payment plan, get your debts in order, or actually looking at your finances has revealed that things are not quite as bad as you had feared. Whatever the cause, this card in a financial Tarot reading signifies that you are moving away from the blind panic about money or finances to a point where you have a better understanding of your financial situation. The anxiety is still there to a degree but it's manageable and no longer all-consuming.
Spirituality
Upright
Spiritually, the Nine of Swords can signify a dark night of the soul. You may feel as though your faith has abandoned you. Your mind may be so overactive you cannot meditate or pray or feel any sense of peace. You may feel as though you are "stuck" spiritually. You may be feeling guilty or shameful and unable to connect to a higher power. Or you may feel like you have lost faith in a higher power completely. This card can indicate a time where you find spiritual practices to be meaningless or a time where you are plagued by the meaning of life instead of being in awe of it.
Reversed
In a reversed position, the Nine of Swords sees us seeing the first light of spirit after a lengthy period of darkness. The noise in our mind reduces enough for us to be able to hear this deeper thing once again. Old guilt or spiritual shame may be lifted. Practices that we previously went through the motions of may regain their significance. It is a card of spiritual recovery and a gradual restoration of our faith in something beyond our anxiety-ridden mind.
🤝 Social Relationships
Upright
In the context of existing friendships and social circles, the Nine of Swords can indicate that you may be feeling isolated in a crowd. You may be experiencing guilt over something you said or did. Alternatively, you may be worrying about what people think of you. Or perhaps you have taken a friend's worries or troubles and are overburdening yourself with them. Social anxiety is a strong possibility with this card.
When Tarot is telling you how you will fare with new people, this card is not a great omen. It indicates that the idea of meeting new people is more daunting than appealing. You may find yourself pre-emptively assuming that they are judging you or will reject you. Your internal monologue may be a negative one, and you will find it difficult to relax around people you don't know.
Reversed
For existing relationships, again in the reversed position it indicates that your social fears may be easing. Misunderstandings are resolved. That friendship guilt or anxiety becomes manageable. Conversations that were once difficult become easier.
If you've made new social connections, this reversal is a positive sign. The walls come down a bit. You find that you're not overthinking first impressions or what people might think so much. You're becoming comfortable with the idea of being vulnerable and letting new people in without automatically expecting the worst from them.
