General Interpretation

Upright

In a general context, the Five of Wands represents arguments, conflict and disagreement. People are butting heads in this Minor Arcana card. In a general context, the Five of Wands indicates that there will be a lot of discussion and differing opinions. Be prepared for multi-tasking, overlap and possibly a bit of a lack of direction with this card in your Tarot spread. This card is not all negative though, a little competition can be healthy and may be all that is needed to push you to achieve your best. It can represent friendly competition, team exercises, brainstorming sessions, getting the creative juices flowing and wrestling with an idea. It can also simply represent having a lot on your plate and feeling like you are fighting to survive or keep your head above water.

Reversed

When reversed, the Five of Wands can indicate one of two scenarios. Either the conflict is coming to an end with people beginning to reach a compromise or common ground, or alternatively, the conflict has simply gone underground. In other words, rather than airing their differences, people bury them. They avoid confrontation. They put on a brave face. The reversed Five of Wands can also represent a person fighting a battle within themselves but determined not to let anyone else know about it. There is a sense of total exhaustion with the reversed card too. Like a soldier who has been fighting a war for so long he's lost the will to fight and would rather just lay down and walk away than continue.

Love & Partnership

Upright

For those in relationships, the Five of Wands can signify a period of bickering and petty arguments. Not the petty arguments that are a red flag for a relationship and can seriously damage it, but the petty arguments that just make the relationship feel tense and difficult. Maybe you both want different things at the moment. Maybe you are both under stress from other areas of your life and taking it out on each other. Whatever the issue, the sense of underlying competition is there.

For single people, this card can indicate a crowded playing field. You may find that you have multiple romantic interests with whom things are getting confusing, or you may find you have to compete to get the attention of someone you like. Dating may feel a little like a war zone at the moment. Romantic interests may initially have a spark but may quickly turn into a clash of heads or a clash of values.

Reversed

In an existing relationship, the Five of Wands reversed can indicate that a rough patch in your relationship may be easing. The arguments are dying down. You are both getting fed up of the conflict and are prepared to work together again. Alternately, it can indicate that one or both of you are completely avoiding the issues. This may create a semblance of peace but the tension is still there.

For single people, this reversal may indicate stepping back from the mayhem of dating. The competitive edge evaporates. You may decide to stop chasing and let things unfold naturally. Or you may be struggling with a conflict over what you truly want in a partner, or quietly wrestling with fears or baggage that is preventing you from taking a chance on love.

Social Relationships

Upright

Within existing friend groups or social circles, the Five of Wands can appear to indicate group tension. People have disagreements. Cliques form. You might find there is drama about plans, about loyalty, about who gets the final say. It's that situation where everyone has an opinion and no one wants to yield. Sometimes it's a constructive argument. Sometimes it's a complete pain in the ass.

In terms of new social connections, meeting new people under this energy can feel a bit combative. First impressions can be full of posturing or one-upmanship. Group situations can feel like a competition to be the centre of attention or to prove themselves. Genuine connections can be difficult to forge when everyone's self-consciousness or ego is at such a high level.

Reversed

For existing social relationships, the Five of Wands in a reversed position can indicate that the group drama is subsiding. Folks are ready to move past previous disputes and start to put their faith in each other again. Alternatively, it can indicate that there is passive-aggressive behaviour within the group or that there are deep-seated grudges that have not been resolved. There may be peace but it's a peace of sorts.

New social connections should be easier with this reversal. The competitive nature is gone and people are more open to listening. There is less ego and more space for connection. However, there can still be a bit of hesitation. Somebody may be holding off on new friends for fear of getting dragged into another energy-sapping social situation.

Work & Career

Upright

In a career Tarot reading, the Five of Wands usually represents competition in the workplace. Your co-workers may be vying for the same promotion, project or accolade. Meetings become a place for arguing. Team work becomes difficult because everyone thinks their idea is the right one. There is nothing sinister about this Minor Arcana card, it's just the natural friction that occurs when driven people work together. Sometimes it spurs everyone on to be better. Sometimes it causes a bad work environment where work doesn't get done because people can't agree.

Reversed

In a reversed position the tension in the workplace is easing. People are learning to work together. Compromises are being reached. Projects that were previously stalled due to disagreements are starting to progress again. However, there is a downside to this reversal. Sometimes it shows that someone has conceded and abandoned their fight for their ideas. They have gone into the background, not because they agree with the outcome but because they have reached the limits of their endurance. It can also indicate internal conflict in terms of career, not knowing which career path to take.

Money & Finance

Upright

In a financial context, the Five of Wands indicates that you may have competing priorities when it comes to finances. You may find that any money you do have is being allocated all over the place and you can't keep track of what is most important. You may be spreading yourself too thin. Or you may be having disagreements with others over shared finances, settling bills or budgets. If you are in business, this Minor Arcana card signifies financial competition such as business rivals fighting for your customers, undercutting your prices or being generally competitive with your company. There is a sense of disorganisation and instability when it appears as regards money.

Reversed

In a financial context, the Five of Wands reversed indicates that the chaos is beginning to subside. You may find that a financial disagreement is being resolved. Budgets may suddenly become a lot more logical. Priorities might start to make sense. Alternatively, it can indicate that you or someone you are dealing with is burying their head in the sand in relation to financial issues. They may be avoiding looking at their bank account or avoiding having difficult conversations about money. The peace and quiet is nice but it could be a false sense of security.

Spirituality

Upright

Spiritually, the Five of Wands signifies a period of questioning. You may find your beliefs being challenged. There may be an old way of thinking clashing with a new way of thinking, and it may take the form of an internal argument. This doesn't have to be negative as there is usually some form of conflict when growth occurs. It can also indicate that you have been introduced to a new spiritual belief that challenges your existing beliefs in some way. Restlessness is the main theme with this card. You know something has to change but you don't know what yet.

Reversed

In a reversed position the quiet spiritual energy still applies. Your inner conflict may be beginning to settle. Someone may be coming to terms with their faith having previously questioned it. You may be finally learning to release your need to understand everything. Alternately, the reversed Five of Wands can indicate spiritual avoidance. You may be rejecting your questions rather than allowing yourself to ask the questions that make you uncomfortable. You can only find your centre by resolving the conflict, not by running away from it.
