General Interpretation

Upright

The Devil is one of the most misunderstood cards in the deck. It does not signify evil in a supernatural sense. What it does signify are the chains we put on ourselves. Addictions, toxic habits, unhealthy relationships, excessive materialism - these are the chains The Devil represents. The tricky thing is the people who are bound by these chains often do not realise how loose they are. There is a sense of being trapped, but this particular prison is mostly self-imposed. The Devil appears when something has an excessive hold on a person's life, whether they are aware of it or not.

Reversed

When reversed, The Devil indicates awakening. The fog clears. Someone sees the patterns that have kept them trapped, realises their situation and starts to detach themselves from whatever was holding them back. This may take the form of conquering an addiction, leaving a bad situation or just realising how much effort has been spent on things that are ultimately meaningless. It doesn't signify that the battle is over. But the person is aware of it now and that's the biggest hurdle. The Devil in reverse is hopeful as it signifies a desire to confront the truth, no matter how uncomfortable that truth may be.

Love & Partnership

Upright

For those in relationships, The Devil may signify an unhealthy relationship dynamic. This may take the form of codependency, jealousy, power plays or simply being in the relationship for fear of getting out. It can also indicate that your relationship is founded more on lust or materialism than emotional connection. It can be a sign of being trapped in a relationship that appears fine to the world but is stifling you.

For single people, this can signify repeating the same destructive dating patterns. Chasing the wrong person. Confusing intensity with intimacy. It can also signify clinging onto an ex or an idea of love that prevents you from moving forward. There is a draw to what is exciting.

Reversed

In a relationship, The Devil reversed signals a turning point. Old power dynamics begin to shift. One or both partners start to see what has been unhealthy and want to change things. This might take the form of having difficult conversations, putting boundaries in place or leaving the relationship if things don't improve. The relationship either changes or ends, but in either case the person regains a sense of themselves.

For single people, in a general context, the reversed still involves letting go of old romantic baggage. Maybe someone finally stops pursuing people who are unavailable. Maybe someone finally accepts their part in a string of unsuccessful relationships. Whatever the case, it involves breaking away from self-sabotaging relationship patterns and moving in a more grounded and authentic direction.

Social Relationships

Upright

Within existing friendships and social circles, The Devil can signify manipulation or toxic group dynamics. Think friendships based on gossiping, peer pressure or drug/alcohol use. It can also indicate that there is someone in your social circle who has an unhealthy influence over you or others. These relationships may be difficult to walk away from due to history or social convention even though they are obviously detrimental.

In terms of new social connections, this card is a warning to be cautious. A new person in your life may be charming or magnetic but they may be leading you to a harmful situation. It can also represent shallow relationships that develop quickly based on shared vices or superficial interests rather than actual trust and respect.

Reversed

In existing social relationships, The Devil in a reversed position indicates that you may pull back from an unhealthy social circle. Maybe you stop enabling a friend's bad behaviour. Maybe you pull away from a group of people who encourage your worst traits. You are beginning to realise who is worth having in your life and who is just dead weight.

In terms of new social connections, this reversal indicates that you are learning to use better judgement. You will become more selective about who you allow into your life. Having dealt with toxic friendships in the past, you now have a filter in place and little tolerance for those who thrive on manipulation or negativity. Any new social connections you make during this time should be far healthier and more genuine.

Work & Career

Upright

As with the general meaning, The Devil in a career context can signify feeling chained to a job, a boss or a working environment that has gotten toxic. This could take the form of an office with heavy politics, a management structure that manipulates you or a job that you stay in for no other reason than it pays the bills. Workaholism is linked to The Devil as well. Working so much that the rest of your life falls by the wayside. The golden handcuffs scenario works well with this card, the money is good but is it worth the toll it's taking on you?

Reversed

In a reversed position, The Devil in a career reading signifies breaking free from that toxic work situation. You may finally leave that soul-destroying job, confront a manipulative colleague or even reconsider your entire approach to work. It can also signify letting go of career choices that are solely motivated by money and starting to pursue work that is fulfilling. The shackles are released and new career options begin to present themselves.

Money & Finance

Upright

Financially, The Devil can signify greed, overspending or being a slave to money in some capacity. It can mean living beyond your means, accumulating debt or making financial decisions based on impulse and instant gratification. It can also indicate illicit financial transactions or being used in a financial deal. The main theme is that money or the absence of it has an undue influence on your decision making or how you feel.

Reversed

In a financial context, The Devil reversed can indicate that you are getting control of your spending or money habits. You may have begun to realise the impact that your irresponsible financial behaviour was having and be taking measures to resolve it, such as cutting up your credit cards or making a budget. Or you may have pulled back from get rich quick schemes that promised the world but ended up delivering nothing. Whatever it is, you are getting back to common sense and balance in terms of your finances.

Spirituality

Upright

Spiritually, The Devil is an indicator of one's shadow self. The parts of ourselves that we would rather not look at. Our fears, desires, shame, anger. When these aspects of ourselves are buried they run us from the background. This card also signifies spiritual stagnation due to materialism or egotism. When we focus too much on the material world, our spiritual side tends to shrivel up and die. The Devil is an indicator that you have disconnected from something somewhere. Often you may be busying yourself so you won't have to face the disconnection.

Reversed

In a spiritual context, the Devil reversed indicates someone needs to do some shadow work! Someone is beginning to confront their darker side with honesty rather than fear. This is where true spiritual growth comes from, not the light easy moments but the messy uncomfortable ones! Old belief systems that kept you small begin to fall away. What replaces them is something authentic, something that comes from real self-knowledge rather than avoidance.
