General Interpretation

Upright

The Death card is one of the most misunderstood cards in the deck. It very rarely refers to actual physical death. What it signifies is transformation. Deep, drastic, unavoidable transformation. Something in your life is coming to an end to make way for a new beginning. Like the seasons, autumn comes and strips the trees of their leaves to make way for the spring to follow. An old version of a situation, old way of thinking or old phase of life is being released. That's a positive thing even if it doesn't feel like it at the time. This is a card of finality but also freedom. Whatever has run its course is being released.

Reversed

When reversed, Death indicates resistance. A change wants/needs to take place, but there is something blocking it. Maybe it is fear. Maybe it is a resistance to letting go of the familiar even if the familiar is no longer working for you. This Major Arcana may signify stagnation and feeling like you are stuck in a cycle. Life and growth are put on the back burner. The transformation signified by the upright card has not vanished, it is just being deferred. The longer you defer this natural shift, the more things will spiral out of control. Death in a reversed Tarot card reading represents the burden of dragging something out that needs to be let go of.

Love & Partnership

Upright

For those in a relationship, the Death card indicates that big changes are coming to the relationship. This could take a number of forms. Perhaps a couple who were previously having a casual relationship become more serious. Perhaps old patterns within the relationship finally collapse, allowing the couple to connect on a deeper level. It is essentially a purging of what is not real between two people. The relationship isn't ending as such, but the way it has been working is changing fundamentally.

For single people, the Death card can signify an old romantic chapter closing. Past heartbreak, old notions of love, an attachment to someone who is no longer with us. All of that is let go of. It creates space, the kind of space that allows a new love to come into your life who suits who you are becoming, not who you were.

Reversed

In relationships, Death reversed can indicate a relationship that is stuck. One or both of you may be avoiding a difficult conversation or refusing to release a relationship dynamic that is clearly not working. Someone might be feeling like they're just going through the motions. The relationship may require a significant change, but neither of you is prepared to deal with it, so it gets left in limbo. That kind of avoidance resolves nothing. It normally just builds tension.

For single people, it can signify being haunted by a past relationship. Old wounds. Repeatedly picking the wrong partner. Being unable or refusing to completely close the door on the past. New love can't come in until the baggage of the past is dealt with.

Social Relationships

Upright

In terms of existing friendships or social circles, the Death card can simply signify a natural shift that occurs in all of our lives. Some friendships are just meant to run their course. Sometimes people outgrow each other, and that's not a failure, that's just life. This Major Arcana trump can indicate the ending of a friendship that no longer fits with who you are becoming, or it can indicate a friendship hitting a rough patch that ultimately leads to it evolving into something stronger and more authentic than it was before.

With regard to new social connections, this card indicates that you will be making space when the time is right. As your old social connections fade away, they will make space for new people who fit with where you are going. Not where you've been. Friendships made while the Death card is in your life may feel more authentic and grounded, as they are based on the present you rather than the past you.

Reversed

For existing friendships, reversed Death can indicate that you may be refusing to accept that a friendship may have run its course. Someone may be continuing to make an effort in a friendship out of a sense of duty or nostalgia even though it's obvious to both parties that you've grown apart. It's a friendship without any meat on the bones. There's no progression, just autopilot. You've convinced yourself that the pain of ending it is greater than the pain of continuing, and so things are dragged out a lot longer than they should be.

With regards to new social connections, Death reversed indicates that you may be finding it difficult to open up to new relationships. Perhaps past friendships have left you feeling let down in a big way. If previous social interactions have caused pain, it can be very difficult to give people our trust when we are carrying old wounds. You are protecting yourself but at the same time isolating yourself. New people come into your life, but they can't get close to you because you haven't fully opened the door yet.

Work & Career

Upright

In a work context, Death can signify the death of a job, role or career path. That may sound dramatic, but it doesn't have to be a bad thing. Sometimes it's simply the act of leaving a job that was a dead end. Sometimes it's being pushed into a new direction by a company restructure that you wouldn't have chosen for yourself. The basic premise is still the same: an old work chapter is coming to an end. Whatever follows will be very different from your previous situation, and that difference is where you'll thrive!

Reversed

In a reversed career reading, this card indicates that you are stagnating professionally. You may be holding onto a position you've outgrown because the alternative is too scary. Perhaps you are due for a layoff or shift in positions, but the process keeps getting delayed, leaving things in limbo. Again, people are afraid of change and so stay in situations that don't challenge or fulfil them. It's like treading water in terms of your career. You're not drowning, but you're certainly not going anywhere.

Money & Finance

Upright

Financially, Death can indicate a change in the way you make, spend or think about money. You may lose an old way of making money or find that an unsustainable way of handling finances comes back to bite you. However, this is not ruin. It is simply letting an old financial pattern fall away so you can build a better one in its place. The process of change may be rough, but the outcome is usually a better financial relationship.

Reversed

In a financial context, Death reversed generally indicates that you are holding on to money habits that are not working for you. Perhaps you are spending excessively on items associated with an old way of living. Perhaps you are refusing to modify a budget that clearly needs to be changed, as your situation has changed. There is a rigidity in relation to money. A refusal to acknowledge that the old system is failing you. This type of financial denial is likely to exacerbate issues rather than resolve them.

Spirituality

Upright

Spiritually, Death is one of the strongest cards in the deck. It signifies a deep inner transformation. Old beliefs, old spiritual practices or ego driven ways of thinking are giving way to something more authentic. More in tune with who you really are. This kind of spiritual growth doesn't happen by gentle prodding. It happens by being stripped down. An inner death and rebirth. It's intense, but you come out the other side feeling lighter.

Reversed

When reversed in a spiritual context, Death can indicate spiritual stagnation. You may be just going through the motions of your practice without any feeling, or you may simply be avoiding doing the inner work you know needs to be done because it's too painful to contemplate. In order to grow, we must allow parts of our old selves to die, and that can be frightening. This Major Arcana card reversed signifies that moment just before you surrender, the moment of holding on immediately before you let go. The transformation you seek is still within your grasp. It's just on hold.
